Cabbie Flees With Cameras Worth Lakhs, Delhi Police Nabs Him In 2 Days

Delhi camera theft shocks. A driver stole equipment, using a gas refill pretext. Police investigation underway, CCTV footage led to vehicle identification.

Delhi Crime News: Imagine setting off on a trip with your most precious belongings. The driver smiles and opens the door. The trip begins, conversations flow, and then suddenly, the joyride ends. Cameras, drones, bags – all gone! This is exactly what happened to Islamuddin and his team.

On April 30, four photographers from Greater Noida, led by Islaamuddin, hail a taxi for Delhi's Trinagar. As soon as they got into the car, one of them said, "I've got a new camera, a Canon EOS R1. It costs Rs 6,00,000." The driver listened to the conversation attentively as he planned his move.

After a while, the driver said, "Sir, I need to fill up the car's tank." This is where he makes his first move. The car stops at a CNG station on Ring Road. The driver says, "It'll only take two minutes; let me fill up the gas. You have to step out." The two minutes were the longest in the photographers' lives.

As soon as the passengers get out, the car speeds off, taking with it the cameras, lenses, drones, and all other valuables. The passengers had neither the car's number nor the driver's name.

How The Runaway Cabbie Was Caught

SHO Ravinder Kumar Tyagi and his team examined the footage from all the CCTV cameras on the Ring Road and at the CNG station. This investigation led to tracing the car's number. The owner turned out to be one Mujibur Rahman, who said he recently hired a driver, named Yogesh, who lives in Sarita Vihar.

When the police started searching for Yogesh, his mobile was found to be switched off and his address turned out to be fake. But the team continued to work on leads and within hours, Yogesh was found. The car and all the stolen cameras, lenses and other gear were also recovered.

Yogesh a Class-10 passout, was once a grocery delivery boy. He became a private car driver in 2023. Police are now investigating whether this was his first crime or if he was involved in other crimes as well.
