Delayed Onset Of Winter
Although mild cold weather usually begins during the Chhath Puja season in Bihar, this year’s winter arrived later than usual. According to meteorologists, the delay can be attributed to larger intervals between western disturbances. These disturbances, which influence regional weather patterns, were active in early December and again on December 26. Additionally, prolonged easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, carrying moisture, prevented a significant drop in temperatures earlier in the season.
Impact On Agriculture
The delayed and reduced cold has had a notable impact on agriculture, particularly on wheat, mustard, and pulse crops. Experts highlight that below-average winter rainfall, critical for these crops, has exacerbated the situation. Bihar has recorded a 71% deficit in rainfall from October to December 2024 compared to normal levels.
Currently, strong western disturbances are active in Bihar, leading to icy northwesterly winds and a sharp drop in minimum temperatures. While these conditions may intensify the cold, the lack of winter rain from October to January has already affected the productivity of key winter crops.
