Seven Policemen Injured In Three Separate Mob Attacks In Bihar

Bihar witnessed three mob attacks on police, injuring seven officers. These attacks occurred following a series of violent incidents where two ASIs were killed.

Seven policemen sustained injury in three separate mob attacks in Bihar, officials said on Sunday. The incident occurred on Saturday in Bhagalpur, Madhubani, and Nawada districts, where police, who arrived at the scene of a clash, were attacked by unruly mobs.

In the past five days, two more such incidents took place. On Saturday, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) died after he was assaulted in Munger district, and another policeman of the same rank lost his life in Araria district on Wednesday.

Additionally, five policemen sustained injury after being attacked by a mob in the Antichak police station area in the Kahalgaon sub-division of Bhagalpur. Among the injured, there were a sub-inspector, three constables and a chowkidar, officials told news agency PTI.

"The incident took place when a police team went to investigate a brawl between two boys, which had escalated. One of the boys hurled stones at the team. Following that, locals also started hurling stones. A police vehicle was damaged," Station House Officer of Antichak Ashutosh Kumar stated.

"Additional forces were immediately sent to the area and the situation was brought under control," he stated, adding that all the injured policemen were rushed to the nearest government hospital for treatment.

"The prime accused, however, managed to flee. Local magistrate Sanjeev Choudhary was also present there when the incident happened. Based on the statement given by Choudhary, a case was registered against 24 people," Kumar added. He further added that so far, five people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Similarly, a police team was attacked in Madhubani district when they rushed to the Parsahi area following receiving information about a scuffle between two groups of people.

"Initially, a group of people indulged in a scuffle with the policemen. Amid the melee, a policeman was hit by a blunt object on his head. He was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital. He is out of danger at present. Some more policemen sustained minor injuries," a police officer stated, adding that a case was filed against 30 people.

In a similar attack, another policeman was injured while he went to Shekodaura with his team in Nawada's Kawakol police station area after receiving information about an incident of stone pelting between two groups of people. "A case has been registered and a search is underway for the accused," the district police stated.

Munger's ASI Killed By Intoxicated With Sharp Weapon

Just hours before the three mob attacks, ASI Santosh Kumar Singh succumbed to injuries sustained during an assault in Nandlalpur village, located in the Mufassil police station area of Munger district.

Singh was part of a police team that had arrived in the village on Friday in response to reports of a scuffle. During the intervention, a group of intoxicated men attacked him, striking his head with a sharp weapon. He was rushed to a hospital in Patna, where he passed away on Saturday.

In another incident on Wednesday night, ASI Rajeev Ranjan lost his life in Araria's Phulkaha area. Police had gone to Lakshmipur to arrest a suspect when a confrontation erupted between officers and locals attempting to resist the arrest. In the chaos, Ranjan was pushed, causing him to collapse. He later died.

Following the series of violent attacks on police personnel, DGP Vinay Kumar directed all police stations to thoroughly assess situations before carrying out raids. He also emphasised the importance of ensuring adequate personnel are present during investigative operations.

"I must also say that people should maintain the sanctity of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) Dial 112. Once a call is received on the number, no time is wasted to reach the spot. The team of Dial 112 comprises not more than three to four personnel. People should not misbehave with them," Kumar told PTI on Saturday.

Tejashwi Yadav Attacks On Nitish Kumar Govt Over Law And Order Situation

Launching an attack on the Nitish Kumar government, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the law and order situation in the state has collapsed.

"After the murder of two ASIs in Araria and Munger, several policemen were injured following attacks on them in Bhagalpur, Nawada and other parts of the state... But the chief minister has not even said two words on the martyrdom and courage of these policemen... People of Bihar are suffering due to the current insensitive government," he said in a post on X in Hindi.

"The CM also holds the Home portfolio, but he is least bothered about the collapsed law and order situation of the state. His government has been in power for 20 years. During Nitish Kumar's tenure, a large number of policemen and officers have been murdered," he claimed.
