Tensions High In Rajasthan's Bhilwara After Mob Lynches Youth To Death

In Bhilwara, Rajasthan, Sitaram Keer, 25, was fatally beaten by a mob after his car accidentally hit a vegetable cart, sparking an argument with the owner, Sharif Mohammad.

A 25-year-old man was beaten to death by a mob in Rajasthan's Bhilwara on Friday night, after a minor collision between his car and a vegetable cart spiralled into deadly violence. The victim, identified as Sitaram Keer from Chhavani town in Tonk district, died at the scene, triggering widespread anger and tension across the locality.

The incident unfolded around 7:30 pm in Jahazpur town near the local bus stand when Sitaram, accompanied by friends Sikandar, Dilkhush and Deepak, arrived in the area to visit a relative. According to police, their car accidentally struck a vegetable cart, causing it to overturn and leading to a heated argument with the cart’s owner, Sharif Mohammad. The quarrel quickly escalated into a violent clash, according to local media reports.

Eyewitnesses reported that nearly 20 people gathered at the spot, dragged Sitaram out of his car, and began beating him mercilessly on the road. The assault left him with severe injuries, and he succumbed to his wounds on the spot.

News of the killing spread rapidly, plunging the town into turmoil. Shops were shuttered as crowds assembled outside the police station late into the night, demanding swift arrests. Bhilwara MLA Gopichand Meena joined the protest, urging justice for Sitaram’s family.

Police arrived and transported Sitaram’s body to a hospital while detaining his three companions at the station for nearly an hour and a half. They were released only after the intervention of Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Singh Yadav. Locals criticised the police for alleged inaction during and after the incident.

Authorities have since sent Sitaram’s body for a post-mortem and launched an investigation. Deputy Narendra Kumar Pareek confirmed that Sharif, son of Chand Mohammad, had been arrested as the prime accused. In total, cases have been filed against 16 named individuals and 20 unidentified persons on charges of murder.

Tensions remain high in Jahazpur, though the situation is reported to be under control. A heavy police presence, including personnel from 10 police stations, has been deployed to maintain order, while officials continue to monitor the town closely.
