AIMIM's Tahir Hussain Gets Regular Bail In Money Laundering Case Linked To 2020 Delhi Riots
Former AAP councillor and AIMIM leader Tahir Hussain has been granted regular bail in a money laundering case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots.

Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has granted regular bail to former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Tahir Hussain in a money laundering case linked to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. However, he will remain in custody in the larger conspiracy case related to the riots, news agency ANI reported.
Hussain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on 6 March 2020 in connection with the money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The court granted him bail, citing that he had already undergone half of the sentence in the case.
Tahir Hussain's Custody Parole For Delhi Poll Campaign
Earlier this year, in January, Hussain had launched his election campaign for the 2025 Delhi Assembly polls while out on custody parole. The Supreme Court had granted him six-day parole from 29 January to 3 February, allowing him to campaign in Mustafabad for 12 hours daily under police supervision.
Just two hours after stepping out of Tihar Jail, Hussain, contesting on an AIMIM ticket, began door-to-door campaigning under heavy police presence. Accompanied by his supporters and half a dozen police personnel, he engaged with voters in the minority-dominated constituency.
Speaking to IANS at the time, Hussain had expressed confidence in his electoral prospects despite his imprisonment. “Despite spending five years in jail, people of Mustafabad are here to support me. It’s they who will decide my fate,” he said. He further added, “After five years, I have had the opportunity to come out of jail, and I am very happy. When I was leaving jail, I was anxious and worried, but I am happy now because so many people came here to meet me, to see me, to catch a glimpse of me.”
Hussain emphasised that he was not banking on any political brand but rather on public support. “The people of Mustafabad are witnessing a son, a brother amidst them. Seeing them come in hordes makes me very happy. I fully trust them,” he stated.
Mustafabad, a constituency with a significant minority population, saw major political parties fielding Muslim candidates in an effort to consolidate votes. Hussain faced competition from Congress candidate Ali Mehdi, son of former MLA Hasan Mehdi, AAP’s Adil Ahmad Khan, a journalist-turned-politician, and BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht, a sitting MLA from neighbouring Karawal Nagar.
Despite his campaign efforts, Hussain ultimately lost the election to BJP’s Bisht.
