170-Foot-Tall Tazia Collapses, Falls On High-Tension Wire During Muharram Procession In UP: WATCH

The procession participants began running here and there after panic broke out when a massive 170-foot-high tazia lost balance and collapsed onto overhead high-tension power lines.

A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided during a Muharram procession after a 170-foot-tall tazia collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 4:30 PM at the Karbala ground in the Sadar Kotwali area in Banwaripur, where a gathering of more than 10,000 people had assembled for the event, Dainik Bhaskar reported.

The procession participants began running here and there after panic broke out when a massive 170-foot-high tazia lost balance and collapsed onto overhead high-tension power lines. The tazia, brought in from Baludiha village, was in the process of being lifted for the ritual when the mishap took place.

No casualties were reported as the power supply had been cut off on time. However, the sudden fall of the tall tazia triggered chaos, with people scattering in fear. Also, the police was already stationed at the venue, prompting swift response from them. The cops controlled the crowd and restored order, the report noted.

The incident was captured on camera. Visuals showed the tazia suddenly collapsing on the ground as people near it ran to save themselves.

Ashfaq, who was responsible for overseeing the tazia, explained that the 170-foot-tall structure slipped while it was being raised. It became unmanageable for the people to prevent it from falling before collapsing onto the live wires.

Shortly after the incident was reported, police station in-charge Deepak Tiwari arrived at the scene to assess the situation. He confirmed that conditions were stable and under control following the accident, Dainik Bhaskar reported.

Efforts were currently underway to safely disentangle the tazia from the live lines.
