Tata Sky Becomes Tata Play; To Offer OTT Services
Starting January 27, Tata Play to offer 14 OTT services to customers
New Delhi: Direct-to-home (DTH) company Tata Sky has now rebranded itself as Tata Play.
According to media reports, Tata Play expects its existing customers will avail the new services following the launch on January 27, with a major revamp in its services.
A joint venture between Tata Group and Walt Disney Company, Tata Sky now looks to expand its television-cum-OTT offerings with several packages. The company has decided to drop Sky from its name after an 18-year operation in the country.
According to Economic Times, Tata Sky, which claims to have over 19 million active subscribers, said its business interests have grown beyond DTH service and includes fiber-to-home broadband and Binge that offers 14 OTT services.
Quoting Harit Nagpal, MD and CEO of Tata Play, the publication reported, “While we originally started as a DTH company, we have now fully transformed into a content distribution company. As the needs of a small base of customers were changing, and they were consuming content on OTT platforms, we wanted to create a platform and provide them with a unified experience. So, we launched Binge. We also offer a niche broadband business.”
The DTH platform has added Netflix to 13 OTT services, including Amazon Prime Video and Disney+Hotstar, as part of its Binge packs.
Tata Play will launch its new service at Rs 399 per month. The new combo packs will be promoted across India in a campaign featuring actors Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan in national markets and R Madhavan and Priyamani in South, Mint reported. In addition, Tata Play has decided to waive service visit charges of Rs 175. DTH customers who have not recharged their packs can also get reconnections for free.
