The matter came to light when a user, Tushar Sharma, tagged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on X, formerly known as Twitter, and asked the minister to implement some changes in the tax regime.

This conversation pointed out how middle-class relief measures have been in focus on social media. Notably, the middle class constitutes 2 per cent of the population and plays a major role in providing funds to the country’s infrastructure and welfare programs. Official data from 2023 showed that only 2.24 crore individuals, or about 1.6 per cent of the population paid taxes in 2022-23.
