At Least One Dead, Several Injured In Germany After Car Drives Into Crowd In Mannheim

One suspect has been arrested from the scene. The police officers are investigating into whether there were more suspects involved, The Guardian reported.

A car drove into a crowd of people in the western German city of Mannheim, leading to one death and multiple injuries.

Mannheim police spokesperson said that at least one person is dead and several others are seriously injured after a car drove into a group of people in the city centre.

One suspect has been arrested from the scene. The police officers are investigating into whether there were more suspects involved, The Guardian reported.

"A car drove into a group of people in Mannheim's city centre. Two people died and several others are seriously injured," Baden-Wuerttemberg state's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl said.

The minister further said that the suspect arrested was a 40-year-old German man from the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

An eyewitness said that people were seen lying on the ground at the scene and at least two were being resuscitated. Local reports said that two people were killed and 25 others were injured. The incident took place during the popular carnival season in Germany.

It is not immediately clear if the driver acted deliberately or if there was any connection to Germany's carnival celebrations.

The incident comes after two similar ramming attacks in other German cities since December, that have killed eight people.
