A piece of tech history has found a new home, as an old hoodie once owned by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was sold for an impressive $15,875 (roughly Rs 13.86 lakh) at an auction. The well-worn sweatshirt, which dates back to Facebook’s early years, surpassed its initial estimated value by a significant margin.

The auction, conducted by Julien’s Auctions last Thursday, featured the hoodie as part of its "Spotlight: History and Technology" collection. Expected to bring in anywhere between $1,000 and $2,000, the final sale price skyrocketed after a total of 22 bids were placed.

The provenance of the hoodie has been well-documented, with reports indicating that the seller originally acquired it through Facebook Marketplace, where it was briefly listed by Zuckerberg himself in celebration of the company’s 20th anniversary.

Proceeds from the auction will go toward supporting extracurricular programs for schoolchildren in Texas, making the sale not just a collector’s win but also a contribution to a good cause.

Zuckerberg, known for his signature casual style, had included a handwritten note alongside the hoodie, adding a personal touch to the auctioned item. “One of my favorite old-school Facebook hoodies. I wore this all the time in the early days. It even has our original mission statement on the inside lining. Enjoy! — Mark Zuckerberg,” the note read. The message was written on official Facebook stationery and was sent to the undisclosed buyer.

The auction listing described the hoodie as a black Alternative brand sweatshirt, custom-made with Facebook’s 2010 mission statement printed inside. The year 2010 was a significant one for both Zuckerberg and Facebook — it was the same year that he appeared on the cover of Time Magazine as "Person of the Year" and the year that the biographical film The Social Network was released, dramatizing the rise of the social media giant.
