Govt Implementing Infrastructure Projects Worth Rs 1,34,200 Crore In Northeast: FM Sitharaman

Sitharaman said the Centre is also developing 4,000 km of roads in the region at a total cost of Rs 58,000 crore.

New Delhi: Stating the ruling dispensation is implementing various rail, road and air connectivity projects worth Rs 1,34,200 crore in the northeast, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said the Union government has been pumping in huge money in developing a number of infrastructure projects throughout the region.

“We are carrying out 20 railway projects worth Rs 74,000 crore for 2,011 km, which are spread across the northeast,” PTI quoted Sitharaman as saying while addressing the ‘Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence’ conclave in Assam’s Guwahati city.

Sitharaman said the Centre is also developing 4,000 km of roads in the region at a total cost of Rs 58,000 crore.

“There are 15 ongoing air connectivity projects in the northeast, costing around Rs 2,200 crore,” she added.

The Finance Minister, however, did not mention the completion period of these projects.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier last month said difficulties in the northeast have reduced since 2014 and development is taking place in the region.

Addressing the ‘Peace, Unity and Development Rally’ at Diphu in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on April 28, Prime Minister Modi said the ‘double engine’ government is working with the spirit of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas.

Prime Minister Modi, who laid the foundation of Veterinary College (Diphu), Degree College (West Karbi Anglong) and Agricultural College (Kolonga, West Karbi Anglong) during the programme, said these projects worth more than Rs 500 crore will bring new opportunities for skilling and employment in the region.

The Prime Minister along with industrialist Ratan Tata inaugurated seven state-of-the-Art-Cancer-Centres and laid the  foundation stone for seven new Cancer centres in Assam virtually.
