Government to launch ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme' to provide digital books to students, said Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 on Saturday in parliament.
The government also plan to enhance rural education infrastructure by providing broadband connectivity to all government secondary schools and primary health centres in rural areas. Additionally, five National Centers of Excellence for Skilling will be established, leveraging global expertise and partnerships.
In the education sector, the capacity of IITs will be expanded, with the total number of students across 23 IITs growing from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh over the past decade. To accommodate 6,500 more students, additional infrastructure will be created in five IITs established after 2014. Furthermore, a Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for education will be set up with an investment of Rs 500 crore. In the field of medical education, the government plans to add 10,000 new seats in medical colleges and hospitals next year, with a target of 75,000 additional seats over the next five years, Sitharaman said during her budget speech.
Speaking on the Budget 2025 announcements, Dhriti Prasanna Mahanta, Vice-President, TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, said, "The Union Budget 2025-26 is a bold step toward making India a global leader in AI-driven innovation and workforce development. The establishment of a Centre of Excellence for AI in Education, with an outlay of Rs 500 crore, presents a unique opportunity to skill India’s youth in cutting-edge AI technologies and create a highly skilled talent pool across industries."
"To maximize its impact, the Centre must integrate multidisciplinary education models, ensuring AI learning is not confined to technical domains but extends across business, healthcare, manufacturing, and other sectors. Modular AI courses should be developed, allowing trainees to learn through a blend of virtual classrooms and on-the-job training (OJT), making learning more accessible and industry-relevant. By prioritizing AI skilling, this initiative will position India at the forefront of global AI leadership, ensuring inclusive and sustainable economic growth while equipping its workforce for the industries of tomorrow," Mahanta added.
