BCCI's First Reaction On Congress Leader Calling Rohit Sharma 'Fat'

BCCI secretary Devajit Saika condemned Congress leader Shama Mohamed for questioning Rohit Sharma’s fitness ahead of India’s Champions Trophy semifinal.

Devajit Saika, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) criticised Congress leader Shama Mohamed over a post on X in which she targeted Rohit Sharma’s fitness amidst the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Congress spokesperson fat-shamed Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma after he was dismissed for 15 runs off 17 balls during the last group-stage match of the Champions Trophy between India and New Zealand. Notably, Rohit led India to a 44-run victory in the match to top the Group A points table in the tournament.

Mohamed also said that Rohit Sharma needs to lose weight and that he is the most 'unimpressive' captain Team India has ever had.

"Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!," she wrote in a post on X that has been deleted now.

'It's Very Unfortunate': BCCI Secretary On Shama Mohamed's Comments

Devajit Saikia condemned Shama Mohamed's remarks on the T20 World Cup 2024-winning captain, calling them unfortunate, especially with India set to play the Champions Trophy semifinal against Australia on March 4 (Tuesday).

"It's very unfortunate that this kind of remark for our captain (Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma) has come from a person who is on a responsible post, especially at a time when Team India is playing an ICC tournament and the team is all set to play the semi-final match," Devajit Saikia, BCCI Secretary to ANI, on Congress leader Shama Mohamed's comments on Team India captain Rohit Sharma.

The former India cricketer Atul Wassan also criticised Mohamed's comments about Rohit Sharma.

"Who is this madam anyway? You’ve given her so much footage, so much limelight. If she is a spokesperson for a political party, she should maintain the dignity of her platform. If she doesn’t even know who she’s talking about—Rohit is a World Cup-winning captain and has now led India to the Champions Trophy semifinal. Such comments shouldn’t be taken seriously because she has no idea about his match fitness, and making loose remarks about his captaincy is shameful," Wassan said in an interview to ANI.
