There Is No Mention Of Celebrating Birthdays By Cutting A Cake

In Hinduism, there is no mention in any scriptures or Vedas of celebrating birthdays by cutting a cake. Additionally, astrology considers blowing out candles and cutting a cake to be inauspicious. However, this does not mean that we should not celebrate birthdays. In Sanatan culture, there are special rules for celebrating birthdays, and following these is considered highly auspicious.

Cutting A Cake Or Blowing Out Candles On A Birthday

In astrology, blowing out candles to celebrate a birthday is considered inauspicious. Doing so invites negativity and destruction into life, negatively impacting health and fortune. The reason behind this is that fire and light hold special significance in Hinduism. The children of a household are also regarded as lamps, and prayers are offered for them to remain radiant like a lamp, ensuring a bright future. Furthermore, Hinduism has a tradition of honoring the fire god rather than extinguishing it. Therefore, the practice of blowing out candles while cutting a cake is not considered a good omen in Sanatan Dharma.

How To Celebrate Birthdays According To The Scriptures

According to Sanatan Dharma, celebrating a birthday or anniversary according to the Hindu calendar is considered more auspicious and accurate than using the Gregorian calendar. The reason behind this is that the energy flowing on the date of one’s birth resonates with the waves present in the body. However, if you choose to celebrate your birthday according to your birth date, keep the following points in mind:

  • On a person's birthday, it is essential to perform their aarti. Doing so helps to cleanse impurities and negativity from the body, while also receiving the blessings of the fire god.
  • On your birthday, make sure to touch the feet of elders and seek their blessings. Visit a temple to have the darshan of the deity. Celebrate your birthday according to your means, but be sure to avoid cooking or consuming non-vegetarian food on this day.
  • These days, the trend of giving return gifts on birthdays is rapidly growing. It is a nice tradition. On your birthday, be sure to give small gifts to children. Additionally, make it a point to donate to the less fortunate on this day. If you are able, performing a weight donation on your birthday is considered highly auspicious.
