Why burden middle class with fuel price hike during Covid-19 crisis?

For 21 straight days, the price of petrol and diesel have been on the rise. The BJP government at the Centre claims that the taxes on petrol and diesel have been increased to fill the government's coffers so that they can fund the schemes that benefit poor. The situation is so dire that in Delhi, the price of Diesel has become higher than petrol. Which begs the question, is it necessary to impose a burden on the middle class to benefit the poor? Why trouble middle class that has already seen its income reduce in times of Covid-19?
