Pahalgam Attack: How terrorists shortlisted Besaran Valley after rejecting 3 high-security zones

In the ongoing investigation of the Pahalgam terror attack, major revelations have emerged from the NIA probe. According to sources, the terrorists had reached Pahalgam as early as 15 April and conducted reconnaissance (rekki) of several crowded tourist locations before selecting the final target. Assisted by overground workers (OGWs) and local contacts, the terrorists first surveyed the Alu Valley route but rejected it due to high security and restricted movement. They then inspected an amusement park, but due to the sparse crowd, it was deemed unsuitable for their plan of maximum impact. The third location under consideration was the famous Betab Valley, situated en route to the Amarnath Yatra. However, the heavy deployment of security forces led them to drop that option too. Finally, on 19 April, the terrorists reached Besaran Valley — known as “Mini Switzerland” for its scenic beauty and significant tourist footfall. Crucially, Besaran Valley lacked a major security presence, making it an ideal target in their eyes. The attackers planned the strike here to cause maximum panic and casualties. On 22 April, the brutal attack took place in this valley. The NIA continues to question over 1,500 suspects, piecing together the detailed planning behind the attack.
