Breaking: “No Detention Camps Till My Last Breath,” Says Mamata Banerjee on SIR Controversy
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has made a strong statement amid the growing controversy over the Special Identification Review (SIR) process, asserting that no detention camps will be allowed in the state under her leadership. Addressing the issue, Banerjee said, “No detention camp will be built in Bengal till my last breath.” She also claimed that no authority has the right to send notices to residents of West Bengal from Assam, calling such actions unconstitutional and politically motivated. The Chief Minister alleged that the SIR exercise is being misused for political gains rather than genuine administrative purposes. She pointed out that completing a proper SIR process takes at least two years, questioning the urgency and timing of the current exercise. Her sharp remarks come at a time when concerns are rising over detention centres, alleged targeting of migrants, and the fear of harassment of citizens. The statement has intensified political debate between the Trinamool Congress and the central government, with opposition parties backing Mamata Banerjee’s stand on protecting constitutional rights. The issue is now expected to dominate political discourse in the coming days.
