Alert: Heavy Rain Floods Mumbai’s Eastern Express Highway, Pumps Fail To Drain Rising Water

Mumbai continues to reel under the impact of relentless monsoon showers, with several key areas witnessing severe waterlogging. One of the worst-hit stretches is the Eastern Express Highway near Sion, where continuous heavy rainfall has left the main road submerged. Despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deploying multiple high-capacity pumps to clear the water, the system has largely failed, leaving commuters stranded and traffic severely disrupted.Visuals from the ground reveal vehicles stuck in waist-deep water, struggling to move ahead. Entire bus stops and long stretches of the road remain submerged, forcing drivers to abandon their routes. Large pipes installed to divert floodwater have also proven ineffective as the downpour shows no sign of slowing. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, warning of more heavy rainfall in the coming hours. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution on waterlogged roads. With continuous rain forecasted, concerns are mounting over traffic chaos, potential property damage, and health risks due to stagnant water.Mumbai’s struggle with urban flooding highlights the city’s crumbling drainage infrastructure, which continues to buckle under the pressure of monsoon rains each year.
