Ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati Is Poaching Researchers & Engineers From Her Former Company, Meta. Here's Why

Murati's AI firm, Thinking Machines Lab, emphasised its vision of building AI that aligns closely with human values.

Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, has launched her own artificial intelligence venture, Thinking Machines Lab, bringing together a formidable team of researchers and engineers from leading tech firms, including OpenAI, Meta, and Mistral, reported Reuters. The startup, unveiled on Tuesday, is positioning itself as a major player in the AI industry, aiming to develop advanced AI systems with a strong foundation in human values and broad application potential.

Murati’s move underscores her ability to attract top talent, particularly from her previous employer. Nearly two-thirds of Thinking Machines Lab's workforce consists of former OpenAI employees. Among them is Barret Zoph, a well-regarded researcher who departed OpenAI on the same day as Murati in late September. Zoph will now serve as the chief technology officer of the newly launched company.

What Is Thinking Machines Lab Working On?

In a blog post announcing the launch, the company emphasised its vision of building AI that aligns closely with human values while expanding its utility beyond the scope of existing systems. This positioning suggests an ambition to challenge industry heavyweights in the evolving AI landscape.

Murati’s departure from OpenAI was closely watched, given her deep involvement in the company’s technological advancements, including her leadership in shaping ChatGPT. Her ability to bring on board a significant portion of OpenAI’s former talent signals potential shifts in the competitive AI research ecosystem.

OpenAI Vs Musk

Meanwhile, OpenAI is currently entangled in a legal battle with billionaire Elon Musk, who has recently made an ambitious $97.4 billion offer to acquire the company’s nonprofit assets. OpenAI, in a court filing on Wednesday, pointed to what it sees as a contradiction in Musk’s stance—his bid to take over OpenAI while simultaneously challenging its shift to a for-profit model.

"Musk has contradicted himself when making an improper bid to undermine a competitor," OpenAI stated in its court submission.

As the AI race continues to heat up, the emergence of Thinking Machines Lab adds another dynamic layer to the industry, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape in the pursuit of next-generation AI advancements.
