Homegrown Koo Launches Self-Verification For All, Aims To Check Online Abuse, Bullying

India's own micro blogging platform and Twitter rival Koo has launched self-verification for all users.

New Delhi: India's own micro blogging platform and Twitter rival Koo has launched self-verification for all users. Koo users, post the verification, will have a green tick on their profiles. The company is hoping that with voluntary self verification, it will be able to check online abuse, bullying, hate speech and spread of fake news.

Users need to enter a government-ID number such as Aadhaar, enter the OTP, and on successful authentication, will get self-verified with a green tick on their profile.

“Koo is at the forefront of promoting trust and safety on social media. We are very proud to be the first social media platform in the world to launch a voluntary self-verification system. Users can get self-verified in less than 30 seconds through our safe and secure verification process. This is a huge step towards lending greater authenticity to users and promoting responsible behaviour on the platform," Aprameya Radhakrishna, Co-founder and CEO of Koo, said in a statement.

According to Koo, the validation process is carried out by government-authorised third parties. Koo would not store any information during the process.

No. ID details are stored and they are only used to authenticate the identity of the user. The details on the profile of the user remain as it used to be before the verification.

"A user who verifies his/her profile is identified as an authentic user, which in turn lends more credibility to their thoughts and opinions. Voluntary self-verification promotes genuine voices on the platform. It also gives them the same privilege of verification that was only available to some eminent accounts on other social media," the company said.
