Google To Phase Out Endless Scrolling In Search: Report

A Google spokesperson said that this move further aims at improving the speed and efficiency of delivering search results.

Google is likely to discontinue the endless scrolling feature in search results of desktop browsers. With this, Google is heading towards a more traditional scrolling system which won't aim at people wasting their time while scrolling endlessly. This will be akin to what we were used to during the earlier days of Google. The same is said to be soon rolled out for mobile users as well.

The long scrolling feature was introduced by Google back in 2022 and now it is likely to be phased out for desktop users. Earlier when users used to browse search results then there was no need to click on the 'Next' button as the pages would continue to load automatically.

Now it is going back to the process of clicking on 'Next' if you want the search to continue. Users will have to manually navigate through pages further.

What's This Feature & Why Is Google Stepping Back To Traditional Ways?

According to the Search Engine Land report, a spokesperson of Google said that this move further aims at improving the speed and efficiency of delivering search results. The spokesperson added that by not loading the pages automatically, users can prioritise and expedite the results which they actively seek.

If we talk about how it will be implemented for desktop users, a pagination bar will reappear at the bottom of the search results page. Desktop users can navigate through pages by clicking on the ‘Next’ or selecting a specific page number.

This method will provide more control over the number of results a user can watch at once.

For mobile devices, this scrolling feature has been active since October 2021, and it is likely to be phased out soon. Mobile users will have to manually tap on ‘More results’ button at the bottom of the page to load more results. It is expected to be implemented in the coming months.
