Apple's 'Made-In-India' Smartphone Shipments Reached Highest Level In 2022: Counterpoint

Overall "Make in India" smartphone shipments decreased by 3 per cent YoY in 2022, totalling 188 million units.

According to a new report by Counterpoint Research, "Make in India" shipments of Apple saw a growth of 65 per cent by volume and 162 per cent by value, resulting in the brand's value share increasing to 25 per cent in 2022 from 12 per cent in 2021. The contribution of exports in "Make in India" smartphone shipments reached its highest level in 2022, with 20 per cent in volume and 30 per cent in value.

However, overall "Make in India" smartphone shipments decreased by 3 per cent YoY in 2022, totalling 188 million units. The primary factor behind this decrease was the reduction in consumer demand due to macroeconomic headwinds, particularly in the second half of the year.

In Q4 2022, Samsung emerged as the top smartphone manufacturer, surpassing OPPO whose manufacturing shipments declined by 31 per cent YoY due to inventory issues in the entry-tier segment.

Senior research analyst Prachir Singh noted that "Apple's EMS (electronics manufacturing services) partners Foxconn Hon Hai and Wistron were the fastest growing manufacturers among the top 10 in Q4 2022. The growth was also fuelled by increasing exports from Apple."

Both Foxconn Hon Hai and Wistron were among the top 10 EMS players in India in 2022 in terms of volume, while Foxconn Hon Hai and Wistron led the EMS landscape in terms of value.

Regarding OEMs, OPPO led the "Made in India" smartphone shipments in 2022 with a 22 per cent share, followed by Samsung. Research Director Tarun Pathak stated that 2022 was a good year for manufacturing and localization in India. The increase in exports from Apple, Samsung, and other OEMs boosted locally manufactured shipments and offset the impact of the decline in local demand.

Pathak also noted that the recent disbursement of PLI incentives from the government and other initiatives, both at the central and state levels, boosted overall local manufacturing.
