AirPods Just Got Smarter: Apple Adds Studio-Quality Recording & Remote Camera Control. Here's When To Expect Update

In a move that’s sure to delight solo performers and vloggers, Apple is introducing a hands-free way to capture photos and videos.

Apple has unveiled a significant upgrade for its AirPods lineup, introducing features that could transform how creators record content and communicate. Announced at WWDC 2025, the new capabilities include studio-quality audio recording and remote camera control, rolling out this fall via a free firmware update with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.

Studio-Grade Audio, Now in Your Ears

Apple is putting pro-level tools into the hands — or rather, ears — of creators. With the new update, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), and AirPods Pro 2 will support studio-quality vocal recording. This allows users to record crystal-clear vocals even in noisy surroundings, thanks to the H2 chip, beamforming microphones, and computational audio enhancements.

Creators like podcasters, interviewers, and mobile musicians can now record on the move with improved vocal texture and clarity. The update also enhances audio across iPhone calls, FaceTime, and other CallKit-enabled apps. And it’s not just limited to Apple’s own apps — third-party platforms like Webex and external camera apps will also benefit.

Press, Pose, Record: Remote Camera Control via AirPods

In a move that’s sure to delight solo performers and vloggers, Apple is introducing a hands-free way to capture photos and videos. By pressing and holding the stem of their AirPods while using the Camera app (or compatible third-party apps), users can remotely start or stop recordings.

“For users who like capturing themselves singing or dancing, the new features make it easy to perform in sync with a soundtrack while simultaneously recording the video,” Apple said. This makes the AirPods a handy remote trigger for content creators who need to be both in front of and behind the camera.

Beta Testing Kicks Off Now

The new features are now available for testing through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta arriving next month via the Apple Beta Software Program. While the final feature set is still subject to change, the update will be available to users globally this fall, though availability may vary by region and language.

“Studio-quality audio recording and improved call quality work across iPhone, iPad, and Mac,” Apple confirmed, underscoring its aim to elevate the AirPods experience across all devices.

With these additions, Apple is clearly betting on AirPods becoming more than just wireless earbuds — they’re turning into powerful, wearable creative tools.
