On Tuesday, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast light to moderate rainfall coupled with thunderstorms and lightning in several locations across South Tamil Nadu, part of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area. The IMD also predicted heavy rain at isolated places in the Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu.

The IMD said the rainfall was caused due to cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian sea. The IMD said, "Yesterday’s trough in easterlies from south Sri Lanka to Westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh coast now runs from south Srilanka to north coastal Tamilnadu and extends upto 0.9 km above mean sea level."

"Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian Sea at 1.5 km above mean sea level persists," it said.

Earlier, Cyclone Michaung caused severe rains in Chennai and nearby areas, causing significant damage. Recently, the southern districts of Tamil Nadu faced heavy rainfall resulting in substantial losses of both public and private property.
