Stalin Writes To Manipur CM Seeking Concurrence To Send Relief Materials To Violence-Hit State

Stalin said that Tamil Nadu government is willing to extend support to Manipur by providing necessary relief materials worth Rs 10 crore.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to Manipur CM Biren Singh seeking concurrence for sending humanitarian aid worth Rs 10 crore for the people staying in relief camps in the violence-hit north-eastern state. In a letter to Manipur CM dated July 31, CM Stalin said, "At the outset, I thank you for the support extended to the Tamils in Manipur and request your continued protection for their lives and property."

"I am informed that more than 50,000 people are staying in relief camps due to the prevailing situation and there is an increasing need for some essential items for the affected people," he said.

At this crucial time, Stalin said that Tamil Nadu government is willing to extend support to Manipur by providing necessary relief materials including tarpaulin sheets, bedsheets, mosquito nets, essential medicines, sanitary napkins and milk powder worth Rs 10 crore.

Stalin said: "These materials will be very useful to the people staying in camps and they can also be airlifted, if required."

Therefore, Stalin requested Biren Singh to give his government's concurrence for humanitarian aid.

More than 160 people have died and hundreds have been injured since ethnic riots started in Manipur on May 3, when a "Tribal Solidarity March" was held in the hill regions to oppose the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification.

The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur's population, reside in the Imphal Valley. A little over 40% of the population are tribal people, mostly Nagas and Kukis, who live in the hill districts of the state.
