Madras HC Slams Functioning Of Police Dept, Says 90% Cops Are Corrupt & Incapable

The remaining 10% of the police personnel are the only honest and efficient personnel, it said.

Chennai: In a scathing comment, Madras High Court on Thursday said that the Police Department has been functioning with 90% of corrupt or incapable officials who cannot conduct investigations properly and the remaining 10% of the police personnel are the only honest and efficient personnel.

According to a report in The Hindu, the court made the observation while hearing a contempt of court petition moved by a woman against a police inspector for failing to investigate a cheating case despite the court's direction. The contempt case came up for hearing before the bench of Justice P Velmurugan who said that only 10% of the police personnel were honest and efficient but they cannot conduct all the investigations.

The Court said it is time for the police department to crack the whip on officials with graft marks and to train other officers who are incapable of a criminal investigation.

The judge after checking the files also found out that the FIR was first registered in 2011 but the police closed the probe terming it a mistake of fact in 2014.

However, the petitioner moved the court in 2021 seeking a fresh investigation but the case was closed again. Thereby, the petitioner was forced to file the present contempt case, said the report.

The judge heard a government advocate who said that the dispute was civil in nature as a result of which the police closed the case. However, the judge observed that the inspector did not appear for the hearing and had disobeyed the court order. He said the truth would have come out if the witness had been investigated but the police did not do so until the witness’ death.
