ISF MLA Nausad Siddiqui Arrested While On His Way To Violence-Torn Sandeshkhali

ISF MLA Nausad Siddiqui was arrested in Kolkata and said he did not why he was arrested and that he did not break any rule.

Indian Secular Front MLA Nausad Siddiqui was arrested by the police near Kolkata's Science City while he was on his way to violence-torn Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, said an officer, according to a PTI report.

The legislator was arrested under preventive laws, the officer said.

The district administration in North 24 Parganas has imposed prohibitory orders in sensitive areas of Sandeshkhali primarily to avert any untoward incident.

Siddiqui, who was scheduled to hold two programmes in Sandeshkhali, said he did not know why he was arrested adding that he did not break any rule.

"I do not know why they have arrested me. This is several kilometres away from Sandeshkhali. I was going to Sandeshkhali to meet the villagers there. I did not break any rule or anything", Siddique told reporters.

As per the PTI report, the ISF MLA was taken to Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar.

Sandeshkhali has been witnessing a series of protests for the past few weeks against the allegations of land grab and sexual abuse by Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his supporters.

In connection with the matter, the Calcutta High Court directed the police to arrest Sheikh and West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has asked the state government to file a report within 72 hours if they fail to nab the TMC leader.

In a letter written to the state government on Monday night, the Bengal Governor said, "In the light of the decision of the Calcutta High Court, the prime accused in the Sandeshkhali incidents, Shajahan Sheikh, may be arrested immediately, failing which reasons for the same may be reported within 72 hours."
