The Kerala government has decided to recommend the early release of Sherin, a convict in the high-profile murder case of her father-in-law, Bhaskara Karanavar. Sherin, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for her role in Karanavar's murder, has completed 14 years of her sentence. The move for her early release comes after her application for remission was reviewed by the authorities.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the recommendation for Sherin's release was made following the advice of the advisory committee at the Kannur Women’s Prison & Correctional Home and the opinion of the state Law Department, as per a report on PTI. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Sherin, who was convicted in 2010 by a fast track court in Mavelikkara, was found guilty of conspiring to murder her father-in-law after he discovered her illicit relationship.
The case, which shocked the state, saw Sherin and her lover being sentenced to life imprisonment. The High Court upheld the verdict, and Sherin's appeal to the Supreme Court was also dismissed.
Chengannur Karanavar Murder Case
Sherin, from a financially struggling background, was brought into the family as a daughter-in-law to secure the future of Binu Peter, the youngest son of Karanavar, who was physically challenged. In November 2009, Karanavar, aged 65, had returned from the US to stay with his son’s family in Chengannur, where he was found murdered, reported Indian Express.
Investigations revealed that Sherin plotted the murder after Karanavar removed her as the nominee for a fixed deposit and to lead her life with her lover. The inquiry revealed that Sherin had been secretly involved with one Basit Ali, whom she had met on the social media platform Orkut.
Further, it revealed that Sherin had used chloroform on Karanavar, then suffocated him by pressing a pillow over his face, as per a report on Mathrubhumi. To stage the crime as a botched robbery, she spread chili powder around the house.
Along with Sherin, the court sentenced Basit Ali, Nithin alias Unni, and Shanu Rasheed to life imprisonment for their involvement in the case.
