'Insult To Adivasis And Poor': PM Modi Slams Sonia Gandhi's 'Poor Thing' Remark On President Murmu

PM Modi slammed Congress over Sonia Gandhi's "poor thing" remark on President Droupadi Murmu, saying it was insult to not just the President but to every poor individual and tribals in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday slammed the Congress for "insulting" President Droupadi Murmu after Sonia Gandhi called her "poor thing" while commenting on her Parliament speech today. He critcised the remark saying that it was an insult to 10 crore tribals and every poor person in the country and claimed that the Congress does not like those who rise from the ground level.

PM Modi heaped praises on President Murmu for addressing the Parliament in Hindi, despite her mother tongue being Odia. He further lashed out at the Congress "shahi parivaar" for finding the speech of a tribal daughter "boring", calling it an insult to the President.

"Droupadi Murmu ji has come here from a tribal family. Her mother tongue is not Hindi, it is Odia. She inspired the Parliament today in a wonderful way, gave a speech. But the royal family of Congress has started insulting her. A member of the royal family said that the tribal daughter gave a 'boring' speech. Another member went one step further and called the President a 'poor thing'. They find the speech of a tribal daughter boring," PM Modi said, while addressing a poll rally in Delhi.

"This is an insult to the 10 crore tribal brothers and sisters of the country. This is an insult to every poor person of the country...They like abusing people, defaming India in foreign countries and talking about urban Naxals. The President delivered an excellent speech, yet every tribal and poor individual was insulted by these remarks. Delhi has to be very cautious. Out of fear of losing, these two egoists have joined hands," he added.

The controversy erupted after Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, while reacting to President's Parliament speech ahead of the Budget session, called her a "poor thing".

"The President was getting very tired by the end. She could hardly speak, poor thing," she had said. This sparked a row as the BJP slammed the "appalling" comment and demanded an "unconditional apology" be made by Sonia Gandhi to the President.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan also reacted to the Congress leader's remark, describing it as "unfortunate and entirely avoidable".
