Karnataka Cop Run Over By Tractor Carrying Illegally Mined Sand, Driver Arrested

A Karnataka Police constable of the Nelogi Police Station died on duty while trying to stop a tractor transporting illegally mined sand in Kalaburagi on Thursday. The driver has been arrested.

A Karnataka Police constable, 51-year-old Mayura Chauhan, of the Nelogi Police Station died on duty while trying to stop a tractor transporting illegally mined sand near Narayanpur in Jewargi taluk of Kalaburagi on Thursday. The driver has been arrested and a case has been lodged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The driver allegedly ran over the constable when he was asked to stop for verification of documents. District in-charge minister Priyank Kharge took stock of the situation and consoled the family members of the deceased. He also assured compensation to the family. Stating that he has already spoken to the Deputy Commissioner and the SP about the incident, the minister said that direction had been given to conduct the investigation.

The incident occurred on Thursday night when the constable was trying to stop the illegal transportation of the sand. . Superintendent of Police Isha Pant said a team was formed to nab the culprit. Police officials had erected a checkpost near Hullur village to curb illegal sand mining activities. The deceased police constable, who was deployed at the checkpost, tried to verify the contents of the truck and  the documents pertaining to its transportation but the driver allegedly ran over the cop and fled.

Isha Pant, SP Kalaburagi, said, "Prime accused tractor driver who ran over head constable Mayura Chauhan on June 15 while he was trying to stop a tractor transporting illegally mined sand in Jewargi taluk of Kalaburagi, has been arrested. Further probe is on."

"A case has been registered under sections 302, 333, 307, 379, 504, and 506 of IPC against those who killed head constable Mayura Chauhan on June 15 while he was trying to stop a tractor transporting illegally mined sand near Narayanpur in Jewargi taluk of Kalaburagi. The tractor driver ran over the police constable. Prime accused tractor driver has been arrested. We will ensure that whoever has carried this out will be punished," she added.

State Minister Priyank Kharge said, "I have once again given strict orders to the police department to immediately take legal action against illegal sand mining. An investigation has been ordered into the incident."
