Fresh Violence In Bengal's Kaliyaganj, BJP Leader Demands CM Mamata Banerjee's Resignation Over 'Rape', 'Murder' Of Minor

Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the BJP MLAs were not allowed to meet the family members of the victim.

New Delhi: Fresh violence was reported from Kaliyaganj in West Bengal amidst anger over the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl whose body was found on Friday morning, news agency PTI reported. According to police, the locals staged protest over the incident on Saturday evening. Slamming the West Bengal government over the recent incident of an alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in North Dinajpur district, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Locket Chatterjee on Saturday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and claimed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo is not doing justice to her post, news agency ANI reported.

“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is not doing justice to her post, she should resign. West Bengal government wants to hide the evidence. There should be a CBI investigation in this case,” ANI quoted the senior BJP leader as saying.

Slamming the police over the handling of the matter, BJP leader Bharati Ghosh, as quoted by ANI, said, "Police overlooked all rules that they must follow when any crime is committed. They dragged the body in a very insensitive manner. Police have become an active participant in the whole process of crime. They are trying to cover up the crime scene, destroy evidence and save the culprits. I demand CBI investigation into this incident."

According to a report by news agency PTI, the girl, a resident of Gangua village of North Dinajpur district, went missing on Thursday evening after she went for her tuition. She could not be traced the entire night, despite extensive searches by her family members and locals. Later, her body was discovered in a canal on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the BJP MLAs were not allowed to meet the family members of the victim on Saturday.

Condemning the incident, Adhikari earlier slammed the government over “lawlessness” and held the police responsible for the crime.

Taking to Twitter, Suvendu Adhikari wrote, “Another rape & murder of a Minor Girl in WB. The dead body of a Class X student; belonging to the Rajbongshi Community, from Kaliaganj; Uttar Dinajpur was found in such condition. Days after Tribal ladies were punished with atonement ritual, this happens to a Rajbongshi girl.”

On the other hand, BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar demanded a CBI probe into the matter in order to ensure justice for the victim. He claimed the police have turned the case around and they are not willing to listen to the villagers. He further alleged that the authorities have already termed the matter as suicide.
