Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim's Son-In-Law Joins Congress, Says 'Wasn't Getting Chance To Work' In TMC

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury made the announcement at a press conference.

New Delhi: Yasser Haider, former Trinamool Congress youth leader and son-in-law of Kolkata Municipal Corporation mayor Firhad Hakim, joined Congress in the presence of party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Kolkata on Saturday, news agency ANI reported.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury made the announcement at a press conference.

Addressing the media, Yasser said, "I was not getting a chance to work in the party I was with earlier. I wanted to join the Congress for a long time. The only reason I joined Congress is to work as a party member. Even in TMC, I was known to be a social worker and not a politician.”

On whether he had taken up his concerns of not being able to work in the party with the TMC leadership, Yasser said, “Since I have now joined the Congress, I won’t hesitate to say that I have never been involved in all the corruption and misdeeds that you hear against us. I have given 120 per cent for the party. I still have no clue why I wasn’t among the (Assembly poll) candidates in 2021. I want to serve the people. Trinamool was once a part of the Congress, so people do have an affection for this party.”

Notably, the former TMC leader had raised the flag of rebellion against the ruling party in West Bengal after he was denied a ticket to contest the 2021 elections. Hitting out at the leadership at that time, he had said those toiling for the party were being ignored, while celebrities were being rewarded with tickets.
