Dan Evans Beats Karen Khachanov In Longest Match In US Open History. How Long Did The Five-Setter Last?

US Open 2024: Dan Evans was 0-4 down in the final set but was at his resilient best in a marathan match to come out on top.

The long-standing US open record for the longest match ever has been broken. It took an epic battle between Britain's Dan Evan and Russia's Karen Khachanov 6-7(6), 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 on Tuesday (August 27). The five-setter marathon match went on for 5 hours and 35 minutes. At the end of it all the Brit had the has laught and came back from a 0-4 defecit to secure his final in the second round.

Evans, ranked 184 in the world, broke the previous record set by Sweden's Stefan Edberg in 1992 when he beat American Michael Chang in the semifinals. That match had lasted 5 hours and 26 minutes.

In what was a closely-fought encounter, Evans was up there with his service game which a stat of 14 aces is enough to testify. It was such a long match that Evans later admitted that he kept an eye on the scoreboard to double check which set he was playing.

I Fought Till The End: Dan Evans After Resilient Marathan Win In Longest-Ever US Open Match 

"When you're a kid, you're just told to fight until the end. That’s rule one," Evans said after the match.

"I've consistently done that throughout my career, and it paid off today."

The match which was staged at the Court 6, a venue, which is usually not as crowded as some of the other courts, was a packed-house as the match headed near the five-hour mark.

As a result of Evans' victory, he is set to face Argentine Mariano Navone in the next round.
