128 of the top women's singles players took to the field a fortnight back in the women's singles draw in the 2020 US Open with an aim to emerge as the champion in the first grand slam being played amidst the Covid19 era. With six rounds of grueling battles on the fast paced hard courts, some stunning upsets and a few bizarre exits; two former grand slam winners stand at the cusp of being crowned the champion at Flushing Meadows as number four seed Noami Osaka will lock horns against Victoria Azarenka in the women's singles title clash at US Open later tonight at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in the Billie Jean National Tennis Centre at New York. While Naomi Osaka ended American Jennifer Brady's fairy-tale run with a 3-set win over the World Number 41 in her semifinal clash, Victoria Azarenka stunned 6-time champion and her long term American rival Serena Williams 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to book her place in the summit clash.With both Osaka and Williams having won two grand slams each, the women's singles finalist would be bidding for their third singles grand slam title. Head to Head Osaka Leads Azarenka 2-1 Osaka and Victoria Azarenka have clashed with each other on three occasions in the past on the WTA tour with the Japanese leading their head to head with two wins over her Belorussian opponent. Osaka has beaten Vika in her last two encounters. Meanwhile Azarenka's lone win over Osaka came back in the Australian Open in 2016.
Grand Slam Titles Osaka and Azarenka have won 2 Grand Slam titles each Naomi Osaka has tasted grand slam success with two singles titles in her kitty courtesy her 2018 US Open win and her triumph at the 2019 Australian Open. Osaka beat Serena Williams to win her maiden grand slam singles title at Flushing meadows two years back. The 31-year Azarenka is a two time Australian Open women's singles champion winning back to back titles in Melbourne in 2012 and 2013. She has also been a finalist at the US Open twice in 2012 and 2013, losing both times to Serena Williams. WTA Rankings Naomi Osaka is currently ranked within the Top 10 at No.9 in the WTA Singles rankings. Azarenka who struggled with injuries and battled her child's custody, only to return back to tour in 2017 ranks a bit lower than the Japanese at 27 in the singles rankings.
