Rio Olympics: Jitu Rai finishes 8th in men’s 10m air pistol final
Rio de Janeiro: Pistol man Jitu Rai flattered to deceive as he finished eighth in the Men's 10m air pistol event at the Olympics here on Saturday.
On the first day of the competition, India were heavily banking on two shooters Jitu Rai and Apurvi Chandela for a medal but both failed in contrasting manner.
Jitu raised the hopes of breakthrough as he reached the finals in his event. He staged a remarkable comeback in the qualifying round to finish sixth.
Jitu, who once looked out of contention with 20 out of the 60 allotted shots remaining, rallied brilliantly at the back end with a flurry of inner 10s to qualify 6th with a score of 580. Pang Wei of China top scored in qualifying with 590 points.
The other Indian in the fray Gurpreet Singh crashed out finishing 20th with a score of 576.
The Gold in the event was won by Vietnam’s Xuan Vinh Hong while Brazil’s Felipe Alameda Wu won Silver and Pang settled for Bronze.
Three-time Olympic Gold medalist Jongoh Jin also finished 5th to be out of medal contention.
Vietnam's Vinh finished with the gold with 202.5, while Almeida of Brazil took the silver and China's Wei settled for bronze.
