IPL ‘Inappropriate’ Or ‘Distraction’? Gilchrist And Shoaib Akhtar Raise Concerns Over India’s Covid-19 Situation

IPL 2021: Amid increasing Corona cases in various states of the country, some ex-cricketers have expressed their concern over the Covid-19 situation in the country and the ongoing Indian Premier League. Read the full report to know who said what.

IPL 2021: Covid-19 Emergency in India is real! The number of corona cases are going upward each passing day. Moreover, the non-availability of ICU beds and oxygen supply has become a major cause of concern in almost all major cities of India. The horrific images from various crematoriums and graveyards are being shared widely on social media. Foreign ex-cricketers, like Shoaib Akhtar and Adam Gilchrist have taken notice of these images.

Adam Gilchrist, in a tweet asked if it was appropriate to have IPL being conducted amid the Covid-19 surge in India. He wrote: “Best wishes to all in India Frightening Covid numbers. #IPL continues. Inappropriate? Or important distraction each night? Whatever your thoughts, prayers are with you.”

Showing concern on India’s Covid-19 situation, he also asked whether IPL is an important distraction in these troubling times?

On the other hand, Shoaib Akhtar, the iconic fast-bowler from Pakistan shared a video on his Instagram of a crematorium. The location of the crematorium was not disclosed, but the visuals were scary, to say the least. Check out the video here:

Akhtar wrote: “Friends from India sharing these devastating scenes. May Allah make it easy for our neighbors. Global help needed.

We must learn & follow SOPs. Things are getting bad here too.”

Adam Gilchrist’s tweet pointedly questions the ongoing IPL during the Covid-19 surge in India. Indian Premier League (IPL) however, has constantly maintained that they have been taking precautions in the bio-bubble. A team is not traveling on a regular basis. Teams are stationed in one city for more than 15 days.

Nonetheless, the comments made by Gilchrist and Akhtar have sparked a new debate on the internet.
