IPL 2025: Can LSG Still Qualify For Playoffs After Costly 37-Run Loss To PBKS?

Punjab Kings handed Lucknow Super Giants a 37-run defeat, denting LSG’s playoff hopes in IPL 2025 with just three games remaining.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) clinched a 37-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 54 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on May 4 (Sunday) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. The win marked PBKS' seventh victory in 11 matches this season, taking their points tally to 15. With three losses and one no-result, they now trail only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who lead the standings with 16 points from as many games.

LSG, after opting to bowl first, conceded 236/5, with Akash Singh and Digvesh Rathi picking two wickets each. In reply, despite quick wickets, Ayush Badoni (70) and Abdul Samad (45) led a late fightback, but LSG finished at 199/7.

They have only five wins in 11 games so far and need to win all three of their remaining games to have a chance to qualify with 16 points. They will also have to work on their net run rate, currently at -0.469, and ensure they bring it up to a positive number.

After the match, Rishabh Pant expressed optimism about Delhi's playoff chances, saying the dream is still alive if they win their next three games. He acknowledged the over-reliance on the top order and stressed the need to take games deeper.

"The dream is still alive. If we gonna win the next three matches, we definitely can turn it around. It makes sense when your top order is batting really well. Every match you can't hope they will come off nicely. It's part of the game. We need to take the game deep. Every time they can't do the heavy job for us. Like you said in the first, we had too many to chase," said Pant.
