IPL 2023: Ben Stokes Proposes Idea Of 6 Penalty Runs If Batter Is Leaving Crease Early After Harshal Patel's Missed Run-Out Chance

IPL 2023: CSK all-rounder Ben Stokes took to Twitter to share his proposal which he reckons will be a non-controversial way to resolve the issue.

Despite repeated reminders from cricket's law-makers that the run-out at the non-strikers end is completely legal and it is the responsibility of the batter to stay within the crease before the ball is released, there still seems to be an opinion that such a mode of dimissal is against the spirit of the game. The debate has once again ignited on this way of dismissal after Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer Harshal Patel tried to run-out Ravi Bishnoi who had left his crease before he had released the ball in the 20th over.

Had Harshal managed to dislodge the bails successfully, the match would have gone into the Super Over but that wasn't to be and the bowler had to re-bowl that ball on which LSG managed to get the required 1 run for victory.

Even though Harshal failed to affect the run out, the issue has picked heat again and now Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Ben Stokes has proposed yet another idea to solve the problem of batters leaving their crease early.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “Umpires discretion.. 6 penalty runs if obviously trying to gain unfair advantage by leaving crease early? Would stop batters doing it without all the controversy."

Here is his tweet:

LSG's 1-wicket win on Monday was their third in four matches which has taken them to the top of the points table. RCB, on the other hand, occupy the seventh position on the table with just a solitary win from three matches.

Talking Stokes' IPL franchise CSK, the Men in Yellow are at the fifth position on the tally with two wins from three matches. The England Test captain missed out Chennai's match against MI on April 8.

"Chennai Super Kings cricketer Ben Stokes is nursing a minor toe injury which forced him out of the match against Mumbai Indians at The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (April 8)," the team said in an official release. However, he is expected to be back for CSK's match against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday.
