Spain Storm Into Euro 2024 Quarterfinals With Big 4-1 Win Over Georgia, Set For Clash Against Germany

Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo all found the net as Spain overturned an early deficit to defeat Georgia 4-1 in Euro 2024 on July 1.

Spain secured a dominant 4-1 victory over Georgia in the UEFA Euro 2024 round of 16 at Cologne Stadium, Cologne on July 1 (as per IST). After conceding an early own goal, Spain overcame Georgia's relentless defence to secure a convincing victory advancing to a blockbuster quarterfinal matchup with hosts Germany in Euro 2024.

Spain started strong, playing most of the game in Georgia's half with a clear intent to score early. However, against the run of play, Robin Le Normand's own goal in the 18th minute gave Georgia a surprising 1-0 lead. This unexpected turn of events put Georgia ahead in the 18th minute of this last-16 tie.

Rodri's Clinical Equalizer Revives Spain's Momentum

Trailing by a goal, Spain increased their attacking efforts, attempting an impressive 17 shots in the first half. They finally equalised in the 39th minute when Nico Williams set up Rodri, who struck the ball cleanly into the bottom-right corner. Despite continued pressure, Spain were held to a 1-1 draw at half-time, largely due to Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili's heroics.

Spain's Second-Half Surge Secures Convincing Victory

Spain started the second half sharply, capitalising on their momentum. Lamine Yamal provided an assist for Fabian Ruiz, who scored to make it 2-1 just six minutes after the restart. Both teams made several changes thereafter, but Georgia found themselves mostly on the back foot.

Ruiz continued to play a key role, delivering a long ball to Nico Williams, who beat a defender before firing into the roof of the net to extend Spain's lead to 3-1 in the 75th minute. Dani Olmo sealed the victory with a driven shot in the 83rd minute, making it 4-1.

Spain saw out three minutes of added time to secure their place in the quarter-finals, where they will now face Germany in Stuttgart on Friday, in a rematch of the Euro 2008 final. Spain won that encounter 1-0, marking the beginning of their dominance in international football.
