WTC 2023-25 Updated Points Table: A Look At India's Chances After 'Horrific' Boxing Day Test Defeat In BGT
India's chances of qualifying for WTC 2025 Final have severely hampered after their 4th Test defeat. Read below for details.
India's horrific campaign in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 hit yet another low as Australia delivered a resounding defeat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The hosts outclassed the visitors on the final day, securing a comprehensive victory and taking a 2-1 lead in the series.
With seven wickets left going into the final session, Australia managed to pull off a remarkable victory at the MCG.

With the 184-run defeat, India have lost their streak of consecutive BGT series wins, which now ends at 4, as Australia will walk into the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney with an unassailable 2-1 lead.
Had there been no rain in the Gabba Test, Australia would have easily taken a series victory with their win today, but the 5th Test now offers the Rohit Sharma-led side salvage some pride, and more than that, keeping their 2025 Final qualification hopes alive.
An interesting 1st Test match between South Africa and Pakistan resulted in a Proteas win, and with that, Temba Bavuma’s men are now officially into the WTC 2025 Final and this leaves only 1 slot open, currently tightly-contested by Australia and India.
India just have one game remaining in their WTC 2023-25 cycle and all they can do is win and hope for other results to fall in their favour.
After the conclusion of BGT 2024-25, Australia will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series, and Sri Lanka will once again play a deciding factor in determining the finalist of the World Test Championship.
Australia just need to avoid a defeat in the 5th Test to qualify for the Final, as India’s PCT will not be higher than that of Australia, even if the latter ends up losing 2-0 to Sri Lanka away.
