WI vs ENG T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Match Highlights: England (ENG) defeated West Indies (WI) by eight wickets in their first Super 8 stage match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on June 20 (India time). After squeezing through to the Super 8 stage by the barest of margins, defending champions England put on an incredible all-round show to defeat the co-hosts and two-time T20 World Cup winners West Indies by a big margin of eight wickets to pick up two points in the Super 8s.

After being invited to bat first by England captain Joss Buttler, West Indies got off to a phenomenal start with Johnson Charles and Brandon King scoring runs at a good rate. However, West Indies lost Brandon King who left the field after twisting his groin. However, the new batter in, Nicholas Pooran, continued to keep the momentum up with regular boundaries.

Moeen Ali got England their first breakthrough as he got rid of Johnson Charles on the first ball of the 11th over. After that the West Indies batters fell into a shell and their run-scoring got slower. However, some late flourish from Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd got West Indies to the target of 180-4 in 20 overs.

Salt-Bairstow Partnership Sees England Through Against Hosts

In reply, England openers Joss Buttler and Phil Salt came out with all guns blazing. They got England to the score of 58 runs in just 6 overs without a loss of wicket. Roston Chase got West Indies their first wicket as he got the opposition captain Joss Buttler out in the eighth over. Moeen Ali too lost his wicket soon after but Jonny Bairstow and Phil Salt saw the English side through with 15 balls remaining. Phil Salt finished with the score of 87* runs with seven boundaries and five sixes. Bairstow ended up with a 26-ball 48 runs unbeaten knock.
