New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir played a captain's knock to lead Kolkata Knight Riders to an eight-wicket winover Kings XI Punjab in their first home game of the Indian Premier League here on Thursday.

Gambhir gunned down the opposition attack with 79 off 49 balls, helping his team overcome the 171-run target in 16.3 overs.

The move to send Sunil Narine (37 off 18) at the top of the order alongside Gambhir worked brilliantly as they smashed 76 off 34 to set up a comprehensive victory.

A strange incident took place during the penultimateover of the KXIP innings as Mohit Sharma hit Trent Boult delivery towards the mid-off and Umesh yadav chased the balled and threw it towards the strikers end. The ball hit the stumps and it resulted in an overthrow.

Colin de Grandhomme on the other end collected the ball and threw it to towards the non strikers end, which again dislodged the bails and KXIP batsmen grabbed four runs for this fielding error.
