Spot Where MS Dhoni's World Cup-Winning Six Landed At Wankhede To Have A Seat Named After Him: Report

Dhoni's World Cup-winning six has a place of its own in India's cricketing folklore.

MS Dhoni's iconic six over long on to seal a World Cup win in 2011 remains one of the defining moments of Indian cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter did not have a very good tournament with the bat before the final. However with an off-spinner and someone who he had faced at the Chennai Super Kings nets Muttiah Muralitharan operating in the middle, the captain promoted himself up the order, coming in ahead of a left-handed Yuvraj Singh.

The rest, as they say is history. Dhoni played an innings that remains etched in the memory of all cricket fans in the country. He absorbed the pressure early on and then timed his innings to perfection, remaining unbeaten on 91 off 79 balls finishing the chase with a six and sending a billion fans into ecstasy. The Men in Blue won the game by 6 wickets and with 10 balls to spare.

And now, 12 years after that memorable night at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to name a seat after the ex-India skipper. The seat will be at the spot in the MCA Pavilion where Dhoni's six had landed. MCA is even looking to inaugurate this memorial during the Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings IPL 2023 match at this venue this Saturday.

“The MCA took a decision today (Monday) to name a seat inside the stadium after MS Dhoni," MCA president Amol Kale was quoted as saying in an Indian Express report.

"The spot will be where his match-winning six landed against Sri Lanka in the final of the 2011 World Cup. We will be requesting MS Dhoni to come to the stadium for the inauguration where he will also be presented with a memento," he added.

It is pertinent to note that though the then MCA Apex Council Member had proposed a similar idea back in 2020, the Council had not passed it then.
