Shanon Gabriel's 4-fer pushes West Indies towards victory

Gabriel bagged 4 wickets and gave 36 runs to restrict the visitors at 61 for 6 at the end of the second day

West Indies pacer Shanon Gabriel dominated Bangladesh on the second day of their ongoing test match. Though the Tigers fought back with their bowling, their batting, much like the first innings, crumpled like a house of cards. They finished Day 2 with 62 runs at the loss of 6 wickets on board.

Bangladesh’s achievement can be restricted to the 3-wicket haul they managed in quick succession, twice. Both the hauls came after Lunch and Tea breaks, respectively.

West Indies started their day at 201 for 2 and opener Kraigg Brathwaite continued to dominate the Bangladeshi attack with support from Devendra Bishoo who, despite being a low-scorer, kep his wicket intact. But soon after he was dismissed, Brathwaite was dropped by Liton Das. The visitor’s clumsy fielding continued as they even gave a life to Shai Hope and Jason Holder.

As the ball was losing its shine, spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan dominated post lunch and picked up quick wickets in their spell to restrict the hosts from 274 for 3 to 288 for 6. But this quick loss of wickets did not dampen the Caribbean spirit as they continued to build the innings with a half-century from Hope. The hosts finally settled on 406 runs. Spinner Mehidy Hasan and debutant Abu Jayed picked up three wickets each.

The visitors, hoping to make a comeback, failed miserably in front of Shanon Gabriel who dominated their innings throughout Day 2 of the match. He bagged 4 wickets and gave 36 runs to restrict the visitors at 61 for 6 at the end of the second day. He was closely supported by skipper Jason Holder who bagged 2 wickets himself. Both the bowlers created havoc in the Bangladeshi upper order as they crumpled for 50 for 6.

While Tamim Iqbal became the first Bangladeshi to score 4000 runs in Test cricket, he still failed to impress. Their hope now rests with Mahmudullah.
