Shakib Al Hasan Wishes To Step Down As Captain, Threatens To Skip World Cup 2023 If Tamim Iqbal Is Selected: Report
In what comes as a major blow to Bangladesh Cricket, star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has threatened to skip the ODI World Cup 2023 commencing on October 5.
In what could be a massive blow to the Bangladesh Cricket team, it is now being reported that star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan could step down as the captain of the ODI team, after taking the responsibility over a month ago. It is pertinent to note that even though Shakib was reinstated as the captain of the ODI side by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ahead of Asia cup and was looked upon as the skipper of the team for the World Cup, a reported cold war between two of the finest cricketers from Bangladesh- Shakib and Tamim Iqbal could result in a big problem cricket board and in turn cost the team.
A source close to BCB has told The Daily Star Shakib's decision to inform the country's cricket governing body that he does not want to lead the team at the world event set to be staged in October-November in India. The 36-year-old apparently met BCB President Nazmul Hussain Papon at his residence alongside Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and conveyed him about his decision. As per a separate report in Somoy TV, Shakib is not too pleased with the management wanting to select Tamim in the squad. He is also not in favour of picking half-fit players in his team.

The report in Somoy TV further claims that Shakib has threatened to skip the World Cup if Tamim is selected in the team, leaving the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in a fix. It remains to be seen how the BCB resolves the issue with perhaps two of the team's biggest match winners in the centre of the controversy. As of now, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the only two teams that have not named their World Cup squad which will get underway on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
