MS Dhoni's 5 Most Memorable Knocks That Define His Greatness

Let’s revisit five of MS Dhoni’s most iconic innings in international cricket.

As former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni celebrates his 44th birthday, fans across the country are honoring "Thala" with grand celebrations.

Known for his calm demeanor and unmatched finishing ability, Dhoni has given Indian cricket fans countless unforgettable moments. While he led India to every major ICC trophy as captain, his individual brilliance with the bat pulled India out of crisis many times.

Let’s revisit five of Dhoni’s most iconic innings in international cricket:

1. 91 vs Sri Lanka – 2011 World Cup Final, Mumbai*

On the biggest stage at Wankhede Stadium, Sri Lanka posted 277. India’s chase began shakily, but after a solid partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli, Dhoni walked in at 114/3 — despite a lean patch in the tournament.

He rose to the occasion with a brilliant unbeaten 91 off 79 balls, sealing the title with that now-legendary six. India lifted the World Cup after 28 years, and Dhoni’s composure under pressure remains unmatched.

2. 113 vs Pakistan – Chennai, 2012*

India were reeling at 29/5 in the first innings against arch-rivals Pakistan. In walked Dhoni and stitched vital partnerships with Suresh Raina and R Ashwin, scoring a gritty 113 off 125 balls* to take India to a respectable 227. Despite the loss, his knock was hailed for its resilience and remains one of the finest counter-attacks under pressure.

3. 99 vs England – Nagpur Test, 2012

In this crucial Test, India were struggling at 71/4. Dhoni joined Virat Kohli to rescue the innings, showcasing immense patience and technique on a slow track. Though he missed his century by just one run, his 99 off 246 balls was pivotal in ensuring a draw — reflecting Dhoni's adaptability in the longest format.

4. 183 vs Sri Lanka – Jaipur, 2005*

Early in his career, Dhoni announced himself with this innings. Chasing 299, India lost an early wicket and promoted Dhoni to No. 3. He responded with a blistering 183 off 145 balls*, smashing the Lankan attack all over the park. India chased down the target with ease, and this innings became a benchmark for ODI dominance.

5. 76 vs England – Lord’s Test, 2007*

Chasing 380 on the final day at Lord’s, India were on the brink of defeat. Dhoni, batting with the tail, stood firm and scored an unbeaten 76 runs, battling the conditions and England’s attack. His knock helped India escape defeat as rain intervened to force a draw — a classic example of Dhoni’s calm under pressure.

These innings reflect the true essence of MS Dhoni — a finisher, a leader, and a fighter.
