After the departure of Jos Buttler, Billings and opening batsman Jonny Bairstow stitched a strong 113 run partnership for the fifth wicket to stage a fightback but it was too late for England to attain victory as the run rate climbed to almost 10 runs an over at the last stage of the match and they finished at 275 while chasing the 294-run total.
During his heroic ton, Billings smashed 14 boundaries and two big sixes. The star batsman hogged limelight after one of his six landed in the parking area and Australia's Mitchell Marsh had to leave the playing area to fetch the ball.
