IND vs SA: Shami Joins Kapil, Srinath In Elite List After Fifer In Vizag Test

With his five-wicket haul against the Proteas, Shami entered an elite list of Indian seamer to have picked up a Fifer in the second innings of a Test match on home soil.

India continued their winning juggernaut in Test cricket at home as they trounced South Africa by a massive 235 run-margin to win the opening Test in Vishakhapatnam and take a handy  1-0 lead in the three-match Test series. While openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal starred with the willow, spin twins Ashwin and Jadeja cast a web around the Proteas, it was seamer Mohammad Shami whose clinical 5-wicket haul in the fourth innings proved to be the game changing spell to bundle out South Africa for just 191 runs. With his five-wicket haul against the Proteas, Shami entered an elite list of Indian seamer to have picked up a Fifer in the second innings of a Test match on home soil. Shami joined legendary Indian fast bowlers like Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath, who have achieved the unique feat in their stellar careers . After spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin combined to give India the first two breakthroughs during South Africa's second innings post which it was a Shami show all the way. Shami produced a match winning spell in the second innings to scalp Temba Bavuma (10), Faf du Plessis (13), Quinton de Kock (0), Dane Piedt (56) and Kagiso Rabada (18) and finish with figures of 5/35 in his 10.5 overs. Shami became only the fifth Indian pacer after the likes of Madan Lal and Kapil to take a five-for in the fourth innings of a Test match home. Bumrah had achieved the feat against West Indies in North Sound earlier this year. Shami cleaned bowled Bavuma, Du Plessis, De Kock and Piedt in the Vizag Test.
