The hosts gained the upper hand on the opening day of the Pune Test courtesy a collective batting effort spearheaded by opener Mayank Agarwal, who notched up yet another ton against the Proteas.

Hosts India posted a healthy 273 runs for the loss of 3 wickets on the board against South Africa at stumps on Day 1 of the 2nd Test being played at the MCA Stadium in  Pune. The hosts gained the upper hand on the opening day courtesy a collective batting effort spearheaded by opener Mayank Agarwal, who notched up yet another ton against the Proteas. Besides Mayank, Cheteshwar Pujara (58) and skipper Virat Kohli (63*) chipped in with handy half tons to help India end day on a commanding position. At Stumps, India were 273-3 in 85.1 overs with skipper Kohli unbeaten on 63 and Ajinkya Rahane giving him company, batting at 18. After India lost Rohit Sharma (14) early to Kagiso Rabada, opener Mayank stitched handy partnerships with the ever dependable Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli to lay a strong foundation for the hosts to build on. Mayank saw off a hostile opening spell from the new ball pair of Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada in the morning session and eventually bloomed into his own with a wide array of shots. Mayank became the second opener after Virender Sehwag to score back to back tons in Tests against Proteas. His 108-run knock was laced with 16 fours and 2 sixes. Meanwhile, skipper Kohli got back among the runs after missing out in the series opener at Vizag. Kagiso Rabada was the standout bowler for the Proteas, picking all three wickets which fell in the day. The Proteas spearhead ended the day with impressive figures of 3 for 48.
