Ashes 2023 1st Test Highlights: Joe Root Stars As England Make Surprise Declaration On Day 1; Australia 14/0 At Stumps

Australia are high on confidence after beating India convincingly in the title match of the World Test Championship (WTC Final 2023).

ENG vs AUS Ashes Series 2023 Day 1 Highlights: Australia is squaring off against England in 1st Test of five-match ENG vs AUS Ashes 2023 Test series that kickstarted on Friday (June 16) at Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham. Batting first, England declared their innings after scoring 393 runs after losing eight wickets on Day 1 - a move that left the cricketing fraternity absolutely stunned. England's declaration on Day 1 is an Ashes record for earliest declaration by a team in first innings in Ashes history.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow were the pick of batters for England. While Root scored his career's 30th Test century (unbeaten 118 runs off 152 balls), laced up with 7 fours and 4 sixes, Bairstow played an important inning of 78 runs. For Australia, spinner Nathan Lyon took the maximum 4 wickets, Josh Hazlewood bagged two wickets, while Cameron Green and Scott Boland picked one wicket apiece.

Australia are high on confidence after beating India convincingly in the title match of the World Test Championship (WTC Final 2023), England, on the other hand, are desperate to take revenge from Australia after losing previous edition of Ashes 0-4.

Zack Crawly and Ben Duckett came out to open the innings for England. Duckett got out after scoring just 12 runs. Zack Crawley scored 61 runs off 73 balls. Ollie Pope went on to score 31 runs. Harry Brook contributed with 32 runs. Captain Ben Stokes was able to score just 1 run off 8 balls. Moeen Ali, making comeback after announcing Test retirement ahead of Ashes 2023, got out after scoring 18 runs. Stuart Broad contributed with 18 runs. Robinson remained unbeaten after scoring 17 runs. England declared their innings with 393 runs on board, which is also a new Ashes record. England's declaration on Day 1 is an Ashes record for earliest declaration by a team in first innings in Ashes history.
